Eight centuries ago, in the year 1200, England's King John granted a Royal Charter to create the town of Ipswich.
Eight centuries later, in the year 2000, the Ipswich Arts Association commissioned textile artist and university tutor and lecturer Isabel Clover to create eight textile panels depicting each of the eight centuries of Ipswich history.
These stunning, "jewel-like" works of art are embroidered by hand and machine stitchery with applique, quilting, and gold work -- raised and padded in relief in rich colors and embellished with gold.
They tell historical stories from medieval times through the 20th century -- including the tale of Puritans leaving England for the "New World" in the 1600s.
Indeed, the British history illustrated so brilliantly and colorfully by Isabel Clover and her team of assistants is part of our American story.
In 2007, during the 400th anniversary celebration of the settlement of Jamestown, Virginia, the Ipswich Charter Hangings will travel to Jamestown and Ipswich, Mass.
