Dear Friends,
Thank you for visiting!
I am excited to tell you that I have taken my business to a new level and I have transformed Hurd Smith into History Smiths.
What’s this all about, you ask?
I kept being asked by more and more small businesses here on the North Shore of Massachusetts, which is screamingly historical, to help them “do more with history.”
These clients (banks, insurance companies, attorneys) weren’t sure what that meant necessarily, but like every other small business they were looking for new marketing ideas.
They knew their customers cared deeply about their local history, and that they were well educated, well off, engaged residents. They were paying attention to what their customers cared about.
At the same time, I kept having conversations with businesses that catered to visitors — restaurants and hotels, especially — about how they incorporated local history into the customer experience. I was struck by how many really could be located anywhere. They had not gone the extra step to provide customers with a historically authentic experience. What a waste!
Again, these businesses were also looking for new marketing ideas, and I would say, “Why aren’t you taking advantage of the history? You could really set yourself apart from the competition!”
What was especially rewarding was when these businesses started asking for my help by telling me, “You’re the only person we know who does history AND marketing.”
They wanted material that was grounded in historical integrity, but they knew that as a businessperson I would give them practical ideas they could apply to achieve the results they wanted.
And so…I decided to focus my attention more on these small business clients and, hence, I launched History Smiths.
But I will share a secret. My ulterior motive here is to engage more and more businesses in promoting and preserving local history — not just as donors, but as actively engaged partners who will work with the nonprofit sector and town governments to come up with business solutions to the challenges they face. The old ways don’t work any more, and I truly believe the business sector can help.
Please visit me at History Smiths!
